Ideas for Journalism Class Topics and Profiles

Article Ideas

Let’s give them time to bloom a little.

  • How to lock a bike. Latest locking systems. What the best lock posts/anchors are (and the worst, least effective).
  • Good minimum strength workout. Transport for aerobics, taichi for balance, ? for strength
  • Urban hikes and bike rides. How they can form basis of an exercise regimen.
  • Interview Tom at the Makerspace. Dominic.
  • Interview Ken Cross at the Renaissance Society.
  • Interview people from the racial equity class.
  • Interview one of our priests.
  • Interview someone from the Y.
  • Interview Stan Yen from tai-chi.
  • Interview someone from RTS.
  • Interview Laura
  • Interview Will
  • Interview another family member.
  • Others to interview
    • Matt Grasso
    • Swimming teacher from SCC
  • Retirement notes. The things I dealt with, the classes I took, etc.
  • Fiction work
  • Poem

A profile of N – a teacher at SCC with an interesting career spanning 40 years in teaching and communications. Target: SCC pubs.

A profile of M – teacher of a church class in Racial Equity, how she got started, a bit of her history perhaps, and her goals, and those of JustFaith.org. She’s interesting because she’s African-American and Catholic – not too common a combination – and because she’s involved in an organization that seems interesting and effective (to me). Target: Catholic pubs. SCC pubs.

An article about how I have retired and what I’ve done so far, a year or so into it.

Target IEEE magazine or local newspapers if they exist: from the perspective of a common, average engineer – no patents, no awards, but longevity in the field and one who’s been shaped by his career. Detail some of the things I’ve explored and how they’ve helped me.

Target SCC student paper: from the perspective of an older student who lives nearby. Detail what benefits SCC has given me and, perhaps, others like me. Detail what further steps I might take and perhaps what SCC could do to better serve people like me.

A website listing good bike routes in this area for utility/commute cycling. Google Maps, while good, does not work well for bicycle route-finding. This site would be open to all contributors. One may already exist – search!

Article about RTS. Perhaps interview its director or Jim, and a worker or two. Also a beneficiary of its services. Could go into IEEE, church pubs, local newspapers. Maybe the Korean newspaper Vicky knows about. Maybe Dave’s weekly paper.

Profile the Loaves and Fishes chef, Ed. Who is he, what got him started in his role. What suggestions might he have for others with his life experience? What suggestions might he have for wanna-be cooks and chefs? For managers? He’s a strong cook and manages volunteers well and I think he is a really good guy. This could go into IEEE, church pubs, local newspapers.

How-to article about lectoring in church. It’s a well-discussed topic and there’s probably an abundance, but Catholics might not have as much and I could do it from a Catholic perspective. Target: Catholic newspapers and mags.

How-to article about how to install grab-bars, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers in different settings.
